Its been 8 months since I first saw this problem and the problem has repeated itself about 4 times. Each time, I lock the mirror up and blow some compressed air on to the shutters. It works everytime. Eventually i guess it will stop working but the camera is not worth fixing at a price of 200$ when a new body used can be had for about 300$. So much for the Nikon quality - I will try a canon next time.

Thanks guys! I dont know if your suggestion fixed it but somewhere else it said the fix was "clean & adjust mirror" and you are suggesting that there is some dirt or something causing this. So I got a can of compressed air and GENTLY (repeat GENTLY) blow it over the shutters and surrounding area and this fixed it for me.

Yippeee! Thanks Rob!

I locked my mirror up to clean the sensor and after so doing it kept jamming. Could not clear it and I tried everything! Cleaning it again, reseting the camera, changing lenses and cards and going through everything in the menu.

Came across this article and thought "Hmmm!"

One snap in Manual mode, the camera got a little confused... It finally let the shutter down reporting that it was now working with a "bulb" setting (which is where you keep the shutter open for a non-determined time... Very useful for "painting" objects with a flash-gun). I sped up the shutter and it worked fine from then on.

Gonna add that to my "quick fix" box for future reference :o)
